A colourful map of the world with the words "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

Before returning to The Father, Jesus told his disciples to, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:19,20a

We need to be making and being true disciples of Jesus.

Teaching disciples to obey Jesus' commandments is part of making disciples. Therefore we need to know Jesus' commandments.

Jesus gave many instructions, but did he ever instruct his disciples to obey the Father's commandments? Or were Jesus' commandments different to His Father's?

In Matthew 23:2-3, Jesus tells his disciples that because "The scribes and the pharisees sit in Moses' seat, you must practice and observe everything they tell you.” To be sitting in Moses' seat means they were reading the law of Moses (God's commandments) to the people. Jesus is telling his disciples to do what the law said, to do everything written in the Torah. He says they MUST practice and observe everything God commands.

Does this mean we have to obey God's commandments too?

According to Matthew 28:19, 20, the disciples were instructed to go into ALL NATIONS and teach them to obey EVERYTHING Jesus commanded. Jesus' instructions clearly include obeying the law of Moses.

So if we are Jesus' disciples, we too, should be obedient to God's commandments. Part of being a disciple is becoming more like our Master and Teacher, copying Him.

How can we make true disciples? By teaching them to obey God's commandments.

How can we be true disciples? By obeying God and making true disciples!

Jesus was perfectly obedient to the Father. We are to learn to be like Him.

Let's keep aiming to be like Him in this world! It's dark out there, friends, and HE is the LIGHT!
